It is fitting that the life story of Cristiano Ronaldo, a powerful forward for the Spanish football club Real Madrid, the United Kingdom’s Manchester United, and the Portuguese national team is the subject of a new comic book written and illustrated by an international group of artists. His story is chronicled in the new comic book Fame: Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 28-page comic book is available this week in print and digital.
Ronaldo’s record-shattering hat-tricks and relentless goals made him the first player to score in four consecutive European Championship Finals. A force to be reckoned with, his skill at handling the ball earned him the FIFA Player of the Year four times. His rivalry with footballer Lionel Messi is the stuff of legend, while his clothing brand, CR7, his philanthropic activities, and his good looks have made him a media darling.
An international group of artists tell the story of the man behind the awards for Portland, Oregon-based TidalWave Comics. Written by Michael Frizell of Springfield, Missouri with art by Angelito Amaro Bernuy from Toledo, Spain and featuring a cover by Pablo Martinena from San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, Catamarca Province, Argentina, the comic book truly breaks down international borders.
“I didn’t know much about soccer – I mean football, of course – before I started working with TidalWave,” said Frizell, whose other comics featuring football superstars Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, also published by the company. “It’s helpful to work with Angel, who I believe suggested we tell the stories of famous players. His knowledge of the sport has been essential to telling a good story.”
Darren G. Davis, TidalWave’s publisher, “I like to publish books that tell positive stories. The stories should inform a reader about a subject while telling an entertaining tale. Our books on famous football players will appeal to people all around the world, whether you call it football or soccer.”
The “Fame” comic book series serves as a companion to the successful “Political Power,” “Tribute,” “Orbit,” and “Female Force” imprints of creative nonfiction comic books offered by TidalWave Comics. The biography comic form allows TidalWave’s talented writers to delve into the history of select newsworthy figures and explore the past which shaped them.
Other sports icons have been featured by TidalWave such as soccer stars Lionel Messi, David Beckham, Diego Maradona as well as Alex Rodriguez and Jackie Robinson.
TidalWave’s biographical comic books have been featured on CNN, Sports Illustrated, TIME Magazine, The Today Show, FOX News, People Magazine among thousands of others. “Comics promote literacy,” said Davis. “It’s my hope that in addition to fans of the player that younger readers will gravitate to the book. There’s a positive message inherent in our work.”
