We recognize that our ‪#‎FemaleForce‬ line of bio comics is heavily slanted towards modern women of influence. But there has been a long line of ‪#‎FemaleFirsts‬ that also deserve recognition. Whereas each of these tremendous pioneers might not get their own comic book, they deserve to be recognized and remembered. Here are a few. (I invite you to add your own in the comments)
• Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkov became the first woman and civilian to fly in space in June 1963.
• Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia became the first woman to receive a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1678.
• Annie Kopchovsky became the first woman to bicycle around the world in Sept 1895.
• Lilian Bland First woman in the world to design, build, and fly an aircraft in 1910
• French athlete, mountaineer, aviator and journalist Marie Marvingt became the first woman to fly a fighter plane in combat in 1915
• Mary Kies Became the First Woman to Receive a U.S. Patent in 1809 for a method of weaving straw with silk
• Belva Lockwood became the first woman lawyer to argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1880
• Anne Bradstreet was the first poet in the British North American colonies to be published in 1640
• Jeannette Rankin, of Montana, is the first woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
• Victoria Woodhull became the 1st woman to run for President of the US in 1872. Frederick Douglass was her running mate.
• Becky Hammon became the first woman hired as a full time assistant coach in the NBA (San Antonio Spurs) in 2014
• Katharine Graham was the first female Fortune 500 CEO in 1972 (Washington Post)
