TIDALWAVE PRODUCTIONS CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH SPECIAL GRAPHIC NOVEL

In honor of Black History Month, comic book publisher TidalWave Productions will offer a new trade paperback called “Black History: Leaders: Volume 4,” featuring biographies of leading African American musicians. The trade paperback is scheduled for release this week.

Every February for the last fourteen years of producing biography comic books, we celebrate Black History Month to show our respect for the black community’s work and sacrifices. No stranger to honoring those who shape our politics and culture, TidalWave has profiled politicians, musicians, actors, and others for more than eleven years using graphic narrative’s unique storytelling properties.

Black History Leaders: Volume 4: Mariah Carey, Donna Summer, Whitney Houston, and Lil Nas X” is written by Darren G. Davis, Michael Frizell, Raphael Moran and art by Victor Moura, Kirk Feretzanis, Pablo Martinena with a cover by Martin Gimenez.

The 96-page anthology includes the unabridged issues featuring Mariah Carey, Donna Summer, Whitney Houston, and Lil Nas X. From the hit “Fame” and “Female Force” imprints by TidalWave comics, this volume explores the musicians who have made an indelible mark on our culture, including LaDonna Adrian Gaines, better known as Donna Summer, the Queen of Disco.  Lil Nas X, the multi-award-winning rapper who breaks glass ceilings as a gay man in hip-hop.  Whitney Houston, an idol to millions with the voice of an angel whose meteoric career defined a generation, couldn’t keep her demons at bay. Often called the Queen of Christmas and the Songbird Supreme, Mariah Carey’s rise to stardom was not without pitfalls – something she isn’t shy to explore with her five-octave range.

“I was a reluctant reader as a kid,” said Davis. “But comic books drew me in. There’s something magical about the combination of words and pictures working together that appealed to me.”

The latest biography comic book joins TidalWave’s ever-growing library of more than 200 comic book biographies.  — Previous titles have profiled other black professionals such as Jackie Robinson, Tina Turner, Colin Powell, Brittney Griner, Oprah Winfrey, Stacey Abrams, and more.

The biographical comic series has drawn a firestorm of media attention, including features on “The Today Show” CNN, MSNBC, Sports Illustrated, and in TIME and People magazines.

TidalWave Comics’ vast catalog of titles can also be downloaded digitally from Kindle, iTunes, EPIC!, ComiXology, Global Comics, Google Play, Overdrive, Library Pass, Biblioboard, Nook, Kobo and wherever eBooks are sold.
